Contents of the treaty

The Treaty of Hamina was signed on 17 September 1809. The Russians signed the treaty in the official residence of the commandant in the fortress where John’s Church now stands (memorial plaque from 1952). The Swedes signed it in the Trygge House.

The Finnish provinces were ceded to Russia one by one: the provinces of Kymenkartano, Uusimaa and Häme, Turku and Pori, Savo-Karelia, Vaasa and Oulu, Åland and part of Västerbotton up to the River Tornionjoki.
